The Aussie Dollar

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

The poor old Aussie dollar continues to slide further down towards the 60c mark.  That makes it for a very expensive trip overseas now and is making families reconsider their holiday plans overseas.

At least it’s good for international tourists visiting our country.  A very affordable holiday indeed and in turn they are supporting our tourism industry.

Boredom Busters also accomodates the overseas tourist.  Lay-bying their tourist attractions prior to leaving home has never been so affordable or easy.

For further information, go to our International customers page on our website.

Practising what we preach

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

School holidays in NSW are coming to a close and although the bickering and squabbling remains a constant on most days, these holidays have been quite the success.  When we started this blog I was coming up to my first semi official school holidays (well my cherubs are only in pre-school hence the semi status ;)) I wrote of daring to think that I was prepared and then all hell broke loose on me.  This time has been a pleasant surprise.

You see I flipped it back on the kids, let them make the decisions.  I was able to do that as I had practised what we preached and lay-byed our entertainment.  It was too easy for the Sydney Royal Easter Show this year and for the bargain price of $7.22 per week (for 20 weeks) was able to lay-by admission to Sydney Aquarium, AMF Bowling and the Movies.  Yes folks, you can put a price on sanity because I just did :).

Now our day in town was a great day and once again my cherubs were more excited by the public transport than by seeing sharks or Nemo (am wondering when this novelty will wear off?) but I do wish to comment on the amazingly long line at the Aquarium.  It went out the door and down towards the harbour cruise counters.

Was this you in the line these school holidays?

This is where having pre-paid admission and having the tickets in the hot little hands such a bonus IMO.  I left the line to wander down to the entrance and discovered an empty separate line for those who had pre-paid tickets.  That was us!  Half of me felt guilty when I walked back to the spot where I’d left my mother and her grandchildren and said yep, we’re in the wrong line c’mon lets go!  Minutes later we were in.  It was great.  A small feature of our business that until you have line ups like that, you forget that it’s a perk to have pre-paid and avoid it.

So next time you’re in a long line at one of Australia’s many attractions waiting to get in, take a moment to glance over at the small pre-paid line.  They may be a customer of ours ;)

Long and labouress weekend

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Hello again one and all. Well what a long weekend it has been. I braved Mascot Airport (stupidly) on Friday to venture to Aspley, Qld for the annual Wentworthville/Aspley Junior Rugby League Tour with my 3rd in line to the throne and football loving son.

What can only be described as the “fingernails down a blackboard” kind of day, starting with a shuttle bus driver who was late, and confused, to the LOVELY LADY that kindy drove us to a taxi rank (after we desperately waved her down) to the cabbie that got us to Mascot in time after bribing him with a generous tip only to be told our seats had been filled by other passengers due to our lateness. (thanks shuttle bus service).

We were however placed on stand-by after the short time of, ooh 3 HOURS!!!  After much annoying yet friendly behaviour by me, offering large quantities of lollies to the very nice gentleman on the Qantas desk to be moved up the list (sadly being declined by said gentleman) we were finally placed on a flight. Mr Nice Gentleman from Qantas looked very happy… to see the back of me.

Once at Brisbane.Airport we were lucky not to have to carry our luggage…because no-one could find it. We did have it delivered to our motel room at 11pm that night by the Airport couriers so we were fortunate we had it the same day. Good work on their part. The rest of our stay was less stressful and a great game was played by both teams, with Wentworthville being victorious. Aspley did not at any time make it easy for Wentworthville to take the game and their team were extremely GREAT sportsmen, and all the people from Aspley, the most GENEROUS hosts.

Until next time may long weekends remain “Few and Far between” Carolyn

Quick and easy recipe

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

New quick slap together meal that the family seems to enjoy and is cheap to make:  Boil spaghetti/pasta until tender.  At the same time, throw in a couple of diced carrots, frozen corn, peas and broccoli heads and cook until tender.  Drain and return to pot.  Pour in ready made cheese sauce (this is the only bit where I cheat! :$) and mix thoroughly.  Add chopped mushrooms, diced ham and stir again.  Serve immediately.   You can vary to suit your families fav veggies and whatever needs to be cleared out of the crisper!
